I don't remember the loaner that I used in high school, but the first horn that I bought in 1960 upon graduation was a "Dovel 87122" (I still have the receipt!) for $90 from Levitt & Elrod on 72nd St. in Manhattan. I picked out an unlabeled mouthpiece from a box that I thought looked nice! I didn't do much until 1976 when I started taking lessons from Charlie Baker (NJ symphony) and he sold it to another student for me for $75, I then moved up to a Yamaha YSL-651 bought during a closeout for $150. It was seriously abused by my grandson in middle school, but I had it resurrected by Dillon Music and its in amazingly good shape. I still use it on occasion along with my Conn 88H.

First horn (in high school) was a conn director, vague memories of not a terrible horn. Moved up to a conn 50H, also a school horn. Near the end of high school bought my first horn , a Bach 42 I still have. Absolutely amazed at the difference, made me do a lot of practicing for a few years. Fabulous horn. Still have it about 40 years later... bought another dozen or so in the last 15 years when I started playing again, from a Duo gravis to a Jupiter soprano. King 3B is my go to horn now, but still play the 42 when I need a valve. > > Curious to hear how many of us on the list started on a really lousy instrument, silver, with a green slide and a pitted mouthpiece, etc. > > >> Tom Ervin >> ervint at u.arizona.edu >> Prof of trombone, Univ Arizona (Emeritus) >> ...now a recovering trombone player... ; >) >> (520) 743-5062 >> website: tom-ervin.com > > > > > > _______________________________________________ > Trombone-l mailing list > Trombone-l at trombonelist.org > http://trombonelist.org/mailman/listinfo/trombone-l_trombonelist.org _______________________________________________ Trombone-l mailing list Trombone-l at trombonelist.org http://trombonelist.org/mailman/listinfo/trombone-l_trombonelist.org _______________________________________________Trombone-l mailing listTrombone-l at trombonelist.orghttp://trombonelist.org/mailman/listinfo/trombone-l_trombonelist.org
