Here are some questions for the group. I have a new student who informed me that she is going to have her wisdom teeth removed "soon".? She says next week but her grandmother thinks later than that.? Regardless, how long should she abstain from playing after having her wisdom teeth removed?? I have mine done over a Christmas break back in the "mumble...mumble...mumble...s".? I don't remember how long I laid off the horn. My thinking is a week, 2 at the most?? What are your thoughts? On a second topic...this particular student is around early high school.? What method books should we be looking at?? I've had her as a student for about 2 months now and we have been working on tone production, air support and tonguing...all things that really doesn't need music to play.? Now, I want to start some methods. What is the current thinking for method books for this age? They were impacted and they hurt for a while after. I think I took at least a month off. I'd say the student should see what the oral surgeon says and how they feel. Dry socket and other negative post operative issues aren't worth an extra week or two off the horn. They could do some listening and practice rhythm or aural exercises when not playing. As far as method books. Brad Edwards Intermediate Trombone is really good. Someone recorded the duet parts on YouTube. I'm big on students having audio to play along with, really helps their pitch and time. If you have the student get Brad's book get yourself the duet parts. Depending on the student I like to have them use Mike Davis' Brass Buzz (beginning), then there's a good warm up in Brad Edwards book, or 10/15/20 minute warm up of Mike Davis' depending on their level. I also like David Vining's Routines for the Student Trombonist. Self dissolving stitches, great oral surgeon, no swelling, no pain, just constant draining the first night. I don?t think I played for two weeks. Our lead trumpet player back in college came to rehearsal the night she had hers out. No way I could have. I spit blood all night. Then they started healing. If the player is an intermediate level player, Reginald Fink Legato Studies are good prior to the ability to tackle Rochut. Schlossberg daily drills are also good as warm ups. I wrote an entire warmup packet for my students and many of the warmups are Schlossberg exercises. I played some gigs with him in the 1980?s and 1990?s before he move to Arizona. I have at least two of his albums buried in the basement. There was a short article in local newspaper when he passed: Gary taught at Ohio State University as an adjunct professor, jazz trombone, in the 1980?s. I saw him perform with the Jazz Arts Group (now Columbus Jazz Orchestra) a few times. Great soloist and wonderful arranger. His arrangement of ?Thou Swell? is a favorite around this area - he wrote it in high school I understand. [?EXTERNAL] Hi all, I've actually never used this before so apologies if this isn't going to the right place. I believe I have fixed the issue, which is due to the captcha sensitivity going haywire this morning. I've reduced it for logins and posts (we have a 2nd and 3rd layer of spam filtering that help with that anyway).... so if people could try to log in and see if I've set it to be sufficiently permissive. Additionally, if you do get in, could you post in the thread I made: https://trombonechat.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&p=184362#p184362 Thanks! -Matt On 7/25/2022 11:55 AM, Andy Fugate wrote: > Not a hack.
