Fortunately, we've caught it quite early and there's very small evidence of damage and my eye pressure is 22, top of the "normal" scale. After dealing with the mental stuff, I started researching and found a 20-year old article from the Chicago Musician's Union about glaucoma and wind players. Trumpet, oboe, and alto sax tend to create backpressure and can frequently exacerbate glaucoma. Does anyone out there have any first- or second-hand knowledge about glaucoma and brass players, particularly trombonists? I know that as a bass trombonist, my instrument really has almost no back-pressure - dual bore Edwards slide with the B3 leadpipe and dual inline Thayers with a Giddings Chinook mouthpiece. But since my doc probably has no info - I didn't think to ask - I'm hoping to find some concrete information. Thanks in advance, Chris -- *Chris Waage, DMA* Staff Arranger and Assistant Conductor, Northland Cathedral, Kansas City, Missouri Music Director, Lexington Wind Symphony, Lexington, Missouri Freelance teacher, clinician. and low brass artist From markhil00 at gmail.com Fri Aug 14 21:43:52 2020 From: markhil00 at gmail.com (mhil001) Date: Sat, 15 Aug 2020 14:43:52 +1200 Subject: [Trombone-l] Glaucoma In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Hi Chris, I have had high pressure in both my eyes for many years. I was prescribed Hysite eye drops at night to lower the pressure and recently had laser surgery to open up channels inside my eyes to reduce the pressure, which seems to have worked as my pressure dropped from over 20 to 15. > On 15/08/2020, at 11:36 AM, Chris Waage via Trombone-l wrote: > > ?This morning, my ophthalmologist diagnosed me with open-angle glaucoma. > Fortunately, we've caught it quite early and there's very small evidence of > damage and my eye pressure is 22, top of the "normal" scale. > > After dealing with the mental stuff, I started researching and found a > 20-year old article from the Chicago Musician's Union about glaucoma and > wind players. My eye pressure was fine, but my ophthalmologist felt it necessary to add drains to my eyes with laser surgery as well so I wouldn?t have to risk the possibility of the drains closing and going blind. I know that my right eye drains forward now and fears up more than it used to since those drains have been added, so I feel fortunate that we caught that when we did. I went in with a different issue which turned out to be floaters, but he was more concerned with what he saw with the drains. I had no idea that was going on with my eyes. Beat wishes with your eye pressure.
